Thomas Burberry was only 21 years old when he established his first shop, focusing on outdoor wear. His revolutionary invention, gabardine—a breathable, weatherproof fabric—catapulted the brand into prominence. This innovation, patented in 1888, became the foundation for Burberry’s outstanding outerwear collections, including the legendary trench coat, originally designed for British soldiers in World War I.

The brand’s signature check pattern, introduced in the 1920s as a lining for its coats, later became an iconic symbol of Burberry. However, in the early 2000s, overexposure led the brand to scale back its use. Under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey and later Riccardo Tisci, Burberry redefined itself, blending tradition with modernity while reinterpreting its heritage for contemporary consumers.
